Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback) her mother starred as Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. But her parents would not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the impact stress might have on their child. Perry stated that she was too nervous to be an actor in high school but began playing at Northwestern University as a way to build relationships after her transfer from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went back to New York to search for acting opportunities on TV, landing small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought her back to California where she found the theater. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In the year 2015, she was with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. It is part of the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, she performed a role as a support in the ABC political drama Scandal with her father. This year, she was cast as a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's role. Despite her connection to the family of her character, she got the part via audition.
